Engineering Viral Vectors for Targeted Therapeutics and In Vivo Circuit Connectomics, Tomas Bjorklund, PhD

In situ neuromodulation has seen significant developments with the rapid recent improvements in optogenetics, chemogenetics and genome editing. However, as these tools progress towards clinical applications, there is an urgent need to develop both the tools to target specific neuronal circuits in the mammalian brain and to dissect circuit function in neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. This presentation will share our efforts to develop novel AAV serotypes with targeted tropism, applications of cell targeted chemogenetics to understand circuit function and how these tools are brought together for a future method of gene-transfer connectomics to map complete circuits in the mammalian brain.
