Toward Understanding Differential Risk for Intellectual Disability: An Experimental Approach, Craig Ramey, PhD

Social and economic status are strongly positively related to health and cognitive development. Under educated and economically poor families have children who are frequently not ready for formal schooling at age 5 in the United States. Our research has been pursuing systematic variations within high-risk populations to better understand degree of risk and differential response to early interventions. We have isolated subgroups of individuals into different profiles of risk and in randomized controlled trials examined their response to treatment. This paper will explicate an emerging typology and examine magnitudes of positive impact on subgroups. Implications of our findings for precision education and public policy will be offered.
