Illuminating the Brain Circuits Underlying Cognitive Behavior in Animal Models, Karel Svoboda, PhD

October 6, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 8:55 am

Karel Svoboda, PhD

Karel Svoboda, PhD, Co-Recipient, 2015 Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research Prize; Group Leader, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Research Campus, Ashburn, Virginia —

The brain is an incredibly complex organ, and major new insights into its functions have typically followed on the heels of novel scientific instruments and new methods.  Now, through a confluence of optical physics, protein engineering, and molecular biology, it is possible to observe directly neural computations during behavior at the level of synapses and neuronal populations.  The talk will highlight recent advances and illustrate their application to understanding short-term memory and decision-making in behaving mice.
